This is where the Coca-Cola Christmas truck has been before in West Midlands
The Coca-Cola Christmas truck is returning to the streets this festive season – as it visits towns and cities across the country. The iconic truck, which often signals the start of Christmas for many, will be returning for the first time in 24 months after last year’s event was cancelled due to Covid. It was announced on Monday that the first stop on the tour this year will be at Glasgow on November 24, with further dates and locations to be announced in the coming days.
: Coca-Cola Christmas truck tour 2021 – all we know so far But the firm is holding back on the dates and locations of the truck tour until closer to the time when they have more certainty that they can go ahead. Each and every year, the iconic red truck tours the nation, bringing festive cheer and sparking jingles of ‘Holidays Are Coming’.
Fans in the West Midlands hoping it will return to the region. But where has it visited before?
The last time the Coca-Cola truck toured the country back in 2019 – it stopped off at 19 locations, starting in Edinburgh and ending in London. It was the truck’s ninth tour of the country.
During that tour, its most local destination was Merry Hill Shopping Centre in Brierley Hill, Dudley, where it spent two days. Huge crowds flocked to see the iconic red truck during its visit to the shopping centre, near to Argos. As festive favourites blared out of the speakers, queues quickly formed, with shoppers eager to bag a free 150ml can of the popular fizzy drink.
There was also an opportunity for people to have their picture taken at several locations alongside the truck – with visitors getting to choose from a sign-posted podium, inside a festive frame or the selfie bridge.
Coventry has also seen a number of visits from the Coca-Cola Christmas truck tour. It visited during the 2017 tour, as well as the 2014 tour. In 2014, it parked up at Asda in Brade Drive, Walsgrave.
While in 2017, it was at Broadgate. : First stop on Coca-Cola Christmas truck tour revealed – with more locations to be announced
The Coca-Cola truck has often included Birmingham on its route over the years – but the city was snubbed in 2019 and 2015, much to the disappointment of fans. In 2015 Yvonne Vale said: “I am disgusted!
It has become a sort of family tradition to visit the Coca-Cola truck with my young son every year. “I was so excited when the tour dates were announced only to be bitterly disappointed to find out it’s missing us out this year. The Coca-Cola truck IS Christmas.”
However, it did visit Birmingham in 2018, 2017, 2016 and 2014. In 2018, it parked up at Eastside Green for a whole weekend. And in 2017, the Coca Cola Christmas Truck parked up in Birmingham – but many people couldn’t find it.
A late switch to the publicised location of the truck appeared to cause confusion with few visitors turning up to see it compared to previous years. The truck was in the city centre but in a new location – Eastside City Park. This appeared to confuse many people who spent the earlier part of the day trying to find it.
In 2017, the queue times were much shorter, with people waiting no more than 10 minutes to get their festive photo opportunity. Michelle Jones, from Sutton Coldfield, told us at the time: “We went to the Bullring first and couldn’t see it! No one knew where it was, so I Googled it and eventually found the address.
“It’s freezing but it does get me the Christmassy mood, and I’m happy I don’t have to queue as long as I did last year!” The previous year, 2016 and in 2014, the big red truck was parked up at St Martin’s Church in the Bullring with massive 40 minute queues. During the 2014 visit, more than a thousand people queued in the rain to get their picture taken in front of the big red lorry.
They were given some Christmas cheer from a quartet singing seasonal favourites ‘ All I want for Christmas’, ‘Jingle Bells’, and the Coca Cola advert theme ‘Holidays are coming,’. And Santa’s elves handed out free cans of coke to passers-by.
In 2017, the Coca-Cola truck visited 42 locations across the UK – including Telford Shopping Centre. It was the second time the truck had visited the Shropshire town, having also visited in 2016 too.
During the 2017 visit, fans could have their selfies projected onto the side of the lorry.
The truck visited Sutton Coldfield in 2018. It stopped off at the Tesco New Oscott Extra for the day on December 13 that year – with a glittering winter wonderland setting.
The truck also visited Wolverhampton way back in 2012, at the old Waitrose store off the Penn Road. It proved extremely popular with people in the city – with traffic queuing along the Penn Road as people tried to visit the supermarket.
